Here’s another close-up of our ‘Bordeaux’s Médoc Terroir’ map, on pre-sale today, general sale tomorrow!

The poster map highlights the gravel ‘terraces’ that lie beneath the classed-growth vineyards of St-Julien, Pauillac and St-Estèphe.

It also shows that quality gravel vineyards are not the sole prerogative of these famous appellations. This detail shows how St-Estèphe, site of Second-Growth Château Montrose, lies next to the commune of St-Seurin, whose appellation is the humbler Haut-Médoc. Yet St-Seurin has patches of the same gravel, known as Terrace 4 and shown on our map as grey-green. And within St-Estèphe, estates such as Ch Meyney share Terrace 4 terrain with Montrose.

Inland, away from the river, the orange tint shows vineyards on Terrace 3: many well-known Crus Bourgeois estates are on this terrace, as is much of Second-Growth Ch de Pez, just outside our extract.

Look out for ‘Médoc Terroir’ and its partner ‘Right Bank Terroir’, featuring St-Emilion, Pomerol and their neighbours, coming soon. And these are the start of a programme to bring a wealth of detail about Bordeaux terroirs to wine-lovers’ walls…

This is a repost from Cécile Loqmane, writing on LinkedIn, which I thought captured so beautifully the collective fight against frost that is ongoing in Bordeaux this week.

‘A thought for those who, in a few days, will light candles at the foot of the vines.
A little spotlight on those who will shorten their night to help the technical teams. Between shadows and the first light of morning, they move forward, flame in hand, through each row, at a time when the grass crunches and nature shivers.

They all work for one property. And you might not know this, but among them are Sylvie from accounting, Marie from sales, Julien from the cellar, and Léa from visitor tours. They volunteer to help fight the frost. These are the same people who will swap their torches for pruning shears, baskets, or harvest sacks when harvest time comes, to keep up with the vineyard’s pace, beyond their usual job roles.

Moments of dust, sweat, blisters, sore muscles, dark circles and tired eyes. But it’s all worth it for those moments of camaraderie, sharing steaks at dawn, playing cards during breaks, and feeling proud to have contributed, even in a small way. They might not mention it, but you’ll hear it in their voices when they talk about the wines and estates they work for. It’s the little details that give them away.’

Last week many of the chateaux had been up all night fighting frost while already treating vines for mildew... and greeting tasters in the morning for the 2023 En Primeur. It’s a tough job making wine.

The usual photos that you see of fighting frost are rather beautiful, with lighted candles burning against the night sky. This is a photo of what happens after serious frost - taken by Jonathan Ducourt back in May 2017 after a particularly devastating late frost in Entre deux Mers.

Our ‘Bordeaux’s Right Bank Terroir’ wine map

Our ‘Bordeaux’s Right Bank Terroir’ wine map will rightly centre on St-Emilion and Pomerol. But over on the left-hand side, divided from the rest by the wide valley of the River Isle, lies Fronsac.

When we were working on Inside Bordeaux, Prof Kees van Leeuwen discovered for us some unpublished research. This reveals the intriguing terroir of Fronsac, which was mapped for the first time in Inside Bordeaux, and now on this enlarged plan of the area.

The map’s detailed key shows the colours used for sixteen soil types across the Right Bank. Soil scientists use yellow to designate limestone-based soils – and as our map shows, Fronsac has a plateau of hard limestone geologically identical to that at the heart of St-Emilion.

The geology might explain why the Romans, then Charlemagne, then Louis XIV, all sought out Fronsac wines. A new generation of estate owners and winemakers are working to bring these wines back to the forefront.

Look out for ‘Right Bank Terroir’ and its partner ‘Médoc Terroir’ with its portrait of three starry appellations at the heart of the Left Bank, coming soon. And these are the start of a programme to bring a wealth of detail about Bordeaux terroirs to wine-lovers’ walls…
