Château Pichon Baron Pauillac 1855 2ème Cru 1966
Dark ruby, less clarity than some in the lineup, with sweet blackberry, a touch of brett, smoky and luscious if a little foursquare. Owned by the Bouteiller family, headed up by Jean Bouteiller, this was a challenging decade at the property, even allowing for bottle variation. You may be lucky to get a better bottle than we had, as there is still discernible structure and tannic grip.

Château Latour Pauillac 1855 Ier Cru Les Forts de Latour 1966
The first vintage of Les Forts de Latour, introduced by estate directors Jean-Paul Gardère and Henri Martin. This is excellent, and remains surprisingly robust and well structured, with coffee grounds, blackberry and campfire smoke. What a pairing with the 1966 Latour - inevitably you can find this at a lower price than the Grand Vin today, and I would suggest that it's worth your time to look at tracking down a bottle. Harvest September 25 to October 10.

Château Pape Clément Graves 1966
Still very much holding up, soft smoky tar notes that are so typical of mature Pessac wines. Tertiary but still with fruit and life, sweet cherry, liquorice, tar, wild strawberry, fine tannins. In 1966, Château Pape Clément was owned by Paul Montagne, a Bordeaux wine merchant and négociant, who had purchased the estate in 1939. This was before the formation of Pessac-Léognan in 1987, and the wine was still bottled as Graves.

Vieux Château Certan Pomerol 1966
Rich, smoky, soft brambled fruits, grilled cedar and white truffles. A very pretty wine, slippery-smooth tannins, easy to love. Fully in its tertiary window, but with charm and lift. Léon Thienpont - father of current owner Alexandre and son of original purchaser Georges Thienpont - was completing his first vintage in 1966. Notable for including Malbec, which was more typical in the vines of Pomerol at the time.
