New Bordeaux hotel alert!

Just opened on the Bordeaux quays, Hotel 56 Paludate, located at the southern end near to the MECA art museum (they offer private viewings and various joint events) and the Boca foodhall.

It’s got 89 bedrooms, and a great looking restaurant called Rivamour that overlooks the Garone river, part of a huge restoration of this section of Bordeaux that is also close to the Gare St Jean railway station.

Wine people might have been around here before, as Millésima négociants is nearby, with its incredible wine cellars that are some of the most impressive in the city, as is Le Point Rouge restaurant with its great cocktail list...

Last week at Wine Paris, the new Cru Bourgeois ran

Last week at Wine Paris, the new Cru Bourgeois ranking was announced that will be in place for the next five years.

The number of Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnels at the top of the ranking has remained stable at 14 - but the names are starkly different, with eight new additions, including the excellent Château Paloumey and Château La Cardonne.

Gone this time around are Château le Boscq, Château Lilian Ladouys, Château d’Agassac, Château Arnauld, Château Belle-Vue, Château Cambon la Pelouse, Château Charmail, Château Lestage.

There is a pretty drastic reduction in numbers overall, with almost 80 fewer properties (just under 38%) than in the previous 2020 ranking, where there were 249 Cru Bourgeois.

The British Government released the biennial repor

The British Government released the biennial report of their wine cellar at the end of 2024, reporting on purchases and consumption from April 2022 to March 2024.

The majority of wines consumed (64%) were from Great Britain, but Bordeaux features highly. Shout out to 1855 2nd Growth Château Rauzan Ségla whose 1994 vintage was particularly popular. A full 50 bottles of it were served during official functions over this 18 month period.

If you want to get in on the wine and diplomacy party, there’s not a whole lot of it left out in the market, but I found a case at Farr Vintners in the UK at £670 in bond... but I would definitely suggest cracking it open soon (as did HM Government) because this is not a vintage for the long haul.

Among the suggestions of things to do in the city are visiting the Grosse Cloche belfry in the Old Town, whose bell named Armande-Louise, was cast in 1775, and exploring markets such as the famous Capucins (the belly of Bordeaux - here’s a photo of the fruit and veg stall that my daughter worked at, although sadly not with her in it!) and Pouyanne vegetable and flower market in st Genès.

In the vineyards, the suggestion is to head to one of the estates that are closest to Bdx city centre - so Château les Carmes Haut-Brion (the traditional chateau is pictured here, in contrast to the hyper modern winery from Philippe Starck), that is the only one with a 33000 postcode, accessible (with a short walk) by tram.
