Andrew Caillard MW on The Australian Ark
The Australian Ark is the story of Australian wine from 1788 to the modern era; it is also one of the most important wine books published this year, or in fact any year. Jane Anson talks to its author, Andrew Caillard MW, about the book, which took 18 years to write, and has earned international acclaim. They also trace his life in wine, and his links to the history that he writes about in the book, as his ancestors were the Reynells, reputed to have established the first vineyard and winery in South Australia. It's a fascinating and multi-layered story, encompassing his successful career as a wine auctioneer and as producer of award-winning films, “Red Obsession,” the story of how China fell in love with Bordeaux, and “Blind Ambition,” the tale of four Zimbabwean sommeliers competing for the first Wine Tasting Olympics team.
