Château Lanessan Haut-Médoc 1967
A non-classified wine from an almost 60 year old often-forgotten vintage shouldn’t hold out much hope for an enjoyable tasting experience, but this is drinking beautifully right now. Melted tannins, finessed wild strawberry and blackberry fruits with flecks of mandarin, tobacco and saffron, this is delicate, with a cushion of air, still delivering. Not ex-château, but exceptional storage conditions may have helped, as might its location on the borders of St Julien, but I would say definitely worth tracking down, as there are numerous wines that are still going strong from 1967. Lanessan in 1967 was owned by the Bouteiller family (as was Pichon Baron at the time), as it was until 2022, when bought by Treasury Wine Estates.
