Help Select Our 1% for the Planet Partner Charity

Jane Anson, November 2024

As the end of the year approaches, it’s the moment for choosing which charity we will work with for our 1% for the Planet donation this year. And we’d love your help.

Below, we have selected six charities that are all extremely deserving – please have a look at what they do, and help us to select two of them to receive our donation.

Wings of the Ocean

This is the charity that we have supported since the first year of janeanson.com – a brilliant local organisation that focuses on cleaning up the oceans and rivers around the Arcachon Bay. They have been in action since 2018, and have two large boats that they use to clean up out in the Atlantic Ocean as well as along the shores, dunes, and various rivers and lakes around the Gulf of Gascogne and the Gironde region. They finance research, education and conservation projects including beach and underwater cleanups aimed at protecting what is one of the key migratory routes for sharks, porpoises, dolphins, turtles, seals and 12 species of sea mammals in the Atlantic Ocean. On a personal note, we have been regularly clearing up the beaches in Arcachon and Cap Ferret for a number of years, although have not done so directly with Wings of the Ocean – if this is something that any subscribers would be interested in, let me know.

Raw Material Coffee

A little different, perhaps, as Raw Material works to support coffee bean growers rather than vine growers – but the two have a lot in common right now, not least finding financially sustainable ways to continue their work. Based out of London, the aim of this social enterprise is to maximise producer profits through the coffee you buy. The group works with producers to improve production practices; training cuppers and graders in remote regions to recognise quality early and empower marginalised groups; working with roasters to adopt buying practices that include stable prices and long-term planning. You can simply buy coffee from them – or we can choose to support their longer-term goals.

Fonds pour L’Arbres

Based in France, Fonds pour L’Arbre is an association aimed at preserving and restoring biodiversity in France, specifically through the planting of hedges and trees. Since 1950, over 70% of hedgrows have disappeared in France, with around 23,500km continuing to be uprooted each year, making farmers less able to protect their crops, their animals and their land, as well as destroying biodiveristy, and putting the natural beauty of the landscape in danger.

Zero Waste Bordeaux

A local non-profit organisation that looks to help all of us make better use of our resources by rethinking our approach to resources. Going beyond traditional recycling (in France, a large majority is still incinerated or going to landfill), this charity is involved in education, lobbying, campaigns such as the Zero Waste Challenge, together with public events and partnerships to raise awareness of ways to decrease waste and introduce a better management of resources, from composting to bulk buying to sorting out our email storage. The aim is to inform about existing solutions and to campaign in support of the suppression of the processing of the least environmentally-friendly waste.

Wine to Water

Wine To Water (WTW) is a global non-profit preserving life and dignity through the power of clean water. Founded in 2004, the group develops water, sanitation and hygiene solutions in direct partnership with local leaders, creating environmental sustainability, education, women’s empowerment, healthcare, and economic growth. They are active in Nepal, Dominican Republic, the Amazon, and Tanzania. One key aspect of their work is to install water filters to replace single-use plastic water bottles – in 2023 alone, WTW filters replaced 162 million plastic bottles. The link to wine, in case you are wondering, if that founder Doc Hendley worked as a bartender in the North Carolina, and originally hosted wine nights and open bars to raise money for water aid. Today they link with partner wineries in California and France.

CIVAM

This group is based in Bordeaux and concentrates its actions around the Dordogne and the Gironde, helping the agricultural community to be sustainable, biodiverse and autonomous. Initiatives include helping develop tools to ensure profitability, lowering use of pesticides, increasing biodiversity, finding ways to lower carbon emissions in dairy farming and supporting educational and training initiatives. Viticulture is a key part of it – one programme supports using sheep among the vines for natural fertilisation and to preserve soil health – but the association helps all types of agriculture.
