Château La Fleur-Pétrus Pomerol 1960

One of the wines of this incredible lineup, it shone from the first moment with its caressing, pillowy tannins, tobacco, white truffles and saffron-infused raspberries, altogether mouthwatering and gulpable, with the seductive charm of a great Pomerol. Produced just four years after the frost that was so devastating to Pomerol in particular, with its early-ripening soils that mean the sap had already begun to rise by the time the temperatures plunged, and many of its vines were entirely destroyed. It meant that this La Fleur-Pétrus would have been produced mainly from the hardier older vines, which helps explain not only its own success, but those of the much-lauded vintages of 1959 and 1961 on either side. A better vintage on the Right Bank than Left, and a time when La Fleur-Pétrus was being made from its original footprints of vines, and the 10th anniversary of its purchase by Jean-François Moieux in 1950.
