Château Palmer Margaux 1855 3ième Cru 1999
One of the joys of the Connoisseur Week is to allow chateaux to showcase vintages that they did particularly well in, and that might have been overlooked. The 1999 Palmer is a perfect example of this – generally tougher on the Left Bank than the 1998 or 2000 on either side of this, but very much a success at Palmer. Less ethereal than the 1999 that we also drank, but it is smooth and supple, with a still-young tannic structure, tobacco leaf and white truffles, and the black fruit kick that reflects the high levels of Cabernet Sauvignon. Harvest September 17 to October 1. Served blind.
