Château Troplong Mondot St Emilion Grand Cru Premier Grand Cru Classé 1962
Tobacco, undergrowth and dried roses give a strong start to this lovely wine, with gentle strawberry, spiced pear, smoked earth, brushed leather, all held together by fine tannins and a delicate floral frame. This has a subtle generosity that speaks of well aged Merlot from limestone soils, with plentiful helpings of charcoal, soot and campfire smoke, and plenty of salinity of the finish. Very much on its drinking plateau, but still alive.
