Corymbia Margaret River Calgardup Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2023
This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wine comes from Corymbia’s Calgardup Vineyard in Redgate, only a mile from the beach. There’s no new oak here, and instead it’s matured in a neutral 1,600 litre French oak vat. A unique expression, as is the intent, this is shy at first with nervy and leafy aromas slow to unfurl. Boysenberry leaf, pink peppercorn, and black olive brine make way for blackcurrant, plum, seaweed, hints of milk chocolate, nutmeg and a sweet mulberry lift. It all comes together with air, resulting in a delicious aromatic profile that masterfully melds fruit and savoury. The palate is sinewy and nervy to start, and at most medium bodied, but it settles into juicy blackcurrant, plum, subtle bay leaf and a glimmer of milk chocolate. There’s an underpinning of saline nori beneath adding dimenson and interest. Incredible tannins here, they’re tight, stacked and grainy – coiling around the core of the wine while saline acidity weaves through the finish adding freshness and long length. There’s a cerebral sensibility to this wine. It’s singular, considered and confident, growing in the glass and revealing itself at its own pace. Give it time in the glass to fully present its uniqueness and, perhaps more importantly, deliciousness.
