Opus One Napa 2002
A touch of earthiness on the aromatics, heads to black truffle and smoked earth, with fennel, mint leaf and blackberry, white pepper spice. An impressively structured and concentrated wine, thoroughly charming and inviting, less precise than the more recent years of Opus. Both sides of the founding families continued to blend together at this point, with Patrick Leon from Mouton and Tim Mondavi from Mondavi. Lowest yields of the decade, 32 days skin contact, 100% new French oak for ageing. Second bottle opened after potential brett in first.
