Wendouree Clare Valley Pressings 1977

Amazing to have tasted two legendary and rarely seen Clare Valley wines from AP Birks this year – Cabernet Malbec from 2002 and this, Pressings 1977, with full thanks to the Jim Barry family for bringing them to share over dinner in Bordeaux. Both were incredible, but this was the standout, insanely young and deep in colour, full of black pepper and liqourice root spice, concentrated with waves of soot and cold ash, a standout wine. Wendouree has no cellar door, no email address, no website. Wines are sold to friends and mailing list only (and to get on that you apparently need to send a hand-written letter…).
