Clos du Clocher Pomerol 1985

Just love the colours of these wines in the 1980s, so nuanced, by turns young and vivid and yet softening towards rose, not yet tawny. This has plenty of intensity on the floral aromatics along with silky caressing tannins, raspberry puree, and mouthwatering salinity on the finish. This is a joyful wine, makes you smile despite being a complicated vintage, cold winter that went down to -10 but it was earlier in the year than the 1956 frost and so less destructive. Difficult early season but hot from July and very good through harvest, so on the Right Bank particularly the vines could catch up with what they missed in the early part of the season.
